Statement on Sierra County Federal Disaster Declaration

Press Release

Date: April 23, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

New Mexicans and New Mexico farmers continue struggle as the state enters the fourth year of significant drought. Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture designated Sierra County a primary natural disaster area following another devastating growing season.

"The ongoing drought will continue to impose economic hardship on our farmers and families this year in New Mexico," Pearce said. "Yesterday's federal disaster declaration will help farmers in Sierra County and surrounding counties to apply for assistance from the Farm Service Agency. I will continue to press for support for our agriculture industry and farmers, as they struggle through another tough year of drought."

Yesterday's designation allows farm operators in Sierra County and seven neighboring counties (Catron, Dona Ana, Grant, Lincoln, Luna, Otero and Socorro) to be considered for certain assistance from the Farm Service Agency, if eligibility requirements are met. The assistance includes FSA emergency loans.
